There is an interesting and controversial news posted in our News column on “ Malaysian oil palm associations call for govt to postpone revising minimum wage “ (Palm Oil Millers Association is included) in which Mr. Tan CS raised a few rather interesting but very constructive comments. Below are his comments: Regarding to appealing for revising minimum wages, I have different opinions, 1) As rightly pointed out, it will increase the production cost. I am of the opinion that the industry associations should urged government to revise the structure of “windfall tax” such as it’s threshold level and rate of taxes. Please bear in mind that windfall tax was introduced in year 2000, the threshold level then was RM 2,000 against the national average production cost of less than RM 1,000 OR national average profit margin of more than than 100 %. 2) Windfall tax is solely determined by CPO price and ignored other factors such as immature estates. 3) Appeal to government for more research and development for mechanisation of various estate operations because of rising labour costs. 4) Plantation players also should make use of revising minimum wages to their advantage to attract more local into the industry. 5) Palm oil industry is one of the very few industries subjected to windfall tax and therefore should be amongst the last for appealing delay in it’s implementation. Mill Engineers are doing a professional engineering job in Palm oil industry. They should be rightfully be eligible to obtain and be accredited Professional Engineer (PE) with the title of Ingenieur, Ir. However, it is strange to find that there are so few palm oil mill engineers in Malaysia been accredited with PE. Why? Are they not interested? Can we share some discussions from all PalmIngenieurs in this community?
